I remember reading or hearing somewhere that Blue Island is one of the oldest suburbs of Chicago. 2000 Census figures show a population of 23,463 and Blue Island real estate is comprised of 3,300 owner-occupied single family homes. My grandparents lived in Blue Island and raised my Mom there. I was raised in Blue Island for 10 years and rented my first apartment on Gregory Street. I worked downtown and the Rock Island train stopped right down the street on Prairie. It is now the Metra .
I remember the hilly streets in Blue Island, especially in the winter. They were great for sledding but we also went to Memorial Park to sled down their hills so we weren't up against cars on the road! We also visited the park throughout the summer and I fondly remember the wonderful 4th of July fireworks show. A more popular person that lived in Blue Island is the actor, Gary Sinise. In fact, I must have gone to school with him as he attended Paul Revere School in Blue Island.
Blue Island IL also has a hospital in town, St. Francis Hospital & Health Center . The Blue Island Park Disctrict manages 10 public parks on 112 acres. I can still remember visiting the Blue Island Public Library as a child. Here is a list of the 12 Blue Island schools.
