Homer Township

Homer Township, IL boundaries are 135th Street on the north, 183rd Street on the south, Smith or Farrell Road on the west and Will-Cook Road on the east. It was founded in 1836 as a farming community and is still rich in scenery and resources. It is one of Chicago's accessible areas that still has plenty of land available for building new residential construction which is causing a boom to the area. The proposed I-355 extension will also continue Homer Township's residential boom.

Homer Township still has lots of green space and some working farms. These include Trantina Farm on 151st St., The Paul Farm nearby, The Welter Farm on 143rd St. and The Purday Farm on the corner of 175th and Gougar.

There is a rich history and in the late 1820's Homer Township was known as Yankee Settlement. In 1832 & 1833 two villages were formed, Goodings Grove and Hadley. In 1836 Homer Township was formed along with Will County. One historic figure, a blacksmith named John Lane, made the first steel plow in 1833. He didn't patent it and a company still in existence today lays claims to the fact that they were the first, but residents of Homer Township are reminded by a marker placed on the corner of Gougar & 7th St. in 1911 in memory of Mr. Lane.
