Lyons, Illinois is a near west suburb of Chicago that has had an everchanging, colorful history. It was incorporated in 1888 and offered saloons for travelers and nearby workers on what was then called Plank Road, now named Ogden Ave. Lyons, Illinois attracted visitors because of the hunting and fishing offered by the Des Plaines River and an area that is now park of Cook County's forest preserve district.
Lyons, IL was a portage territory for Indians travelling the waters in canoes. The French-Canadian explorer, Louis Joliet visited Lyons in 1673 during his search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Cream City Amusement Park attracted customers until around 1907, when another park, White City, lured them away.
The American Riding Academy offered horse rides until 1929, when the neighbors decided the horses were no longer welcome. In 1930 a public pool was built on the amusement park site and is a remaining attraction to this day, along with picnic grounds nearby.
I still remember when Lyons used to have an area which was near Route 66, where about a 2 block area was a little "sin city" with its blue-light bars and more. Residents fought to clean this area up and succeeded, leaving Lyons a nice, quiet Chicago suburb.
