Riverside, Illinois is a wonderful, historic community that was built in the 1860's with a rural feel yet close access to downtown Chicago (11 miles away). It still retains that quaint feeling today and the entirevillage is designated as a National Historic Landmark! Fifty-six buildings in Riverside have been designated as local landmarks, including the water tower pictured to the left. There are a variety of styles including some Frank Lloyd Wright homes. In fact, the town was designed by famed landscape architects Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, who designed Central Park in New York City and the Biltmore estate.
The city was built with meandering streets following the Des Plaines river curves and utilizing plenty of green space based around several larger parks and 41 smaller triangular parks throughout the village at intersections. Are there any negatives to Riverside?Wonderful amenities provided by Riverside commands top dollar and high taxes, since Riverside is mostly residential. Also, because of its historic landmark status any changes that homeowners make to their property has to be scrutinized by the preservation committee to make sure everything stays within proper standards.
