As you can see from the above chart, we definitely have four distinct seasons.

  • Spring still brings snow and cold temps with our respite being the first spring crocuses blooming, giving a hint of the foliage and warmer weather to come.
  • Summer has also brought some extreme weather.  There are 2 high temps recorded of 105 degrees downtown Chicago (July 24, 1934) and 106 degrees in the Midway area on July 13, 1995.  I don't mind the heat, it's the humidity that bothers me and we get many humid summer days.
  • Fall is the favorite season for many as we still have warmer days and colorful foliage.  But when the leaves start falling we have our fall outdoor job of raking.  We get some summer-like days and can also get snow; so fall is a memory of summer and a preview of winter.
  • Winter offers cold temperatures and snow.  I have been able to attest to several of the coldest days ever recorded.  The coldest day was on January 20, 1985, when it was 27 degrees below zero.  I was also witness to the most snow accumulated during a single snowstorm, which was 23 inches.  This occurred between January 26 & 27, 1967.
